Microsoft PowerPoint - Heritage Caucus 2013Coupeville is proud to be an official Washington State Main Street town.  Along with many other historic towns in Washington and around the country we are working to preserve our history.  We are Washington’s second oldest town, founded in 1853, and the Main Street program is perfect for us.

CHWA membership is open to anyone with an interest in the preservation and a love of Coupeville and its history.

Membership dues are $40.00 per year, that’s 0.1 percent of a penny per day.

As a catalyst for economic growth and community pride, CHWA is comprised of local businesses, building and homeowners, organizations and community partners.

The CHWA office is located at the Coupeville Chamber visitors center at 905 NW Alexander (old Fire House).

We also rely on grants and volunteer hours.

CHWA uses the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Four Point Program.

• Design: Promote, research and support improvements and enhancements that benefit our historic downtown.

• Organization: Achieve consensus and cooperation between businesses, building owners, citizens and groups, who have an invested roll in the Coupeville preservation and revitalization process.

• Economic Sustainability: Continually seeking to strengthen the economic assets of historic downtown of Coupeville, promoting easily accessed, affordable, recreation, dining, shopping and relaxation to local and tourist visitors alike.

• Promotion: Creating a cohesive and positive environment for business and property owners, local citizens, visitors, customers, historians, potential investors and new businesses, based on Coupeville’s unique HISTORY, location and downtown attributes.

Over the past 35 years, the National Main Street Center has led the development of a national network of over 2,000 historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.. The people who make up Main Street America are citizens who share passion for history and are willing to donate, engage, or advocate for it on a local level.

Historic communities have special needs. We are not the same as newer towns.  Our acceptance into the Main Street program is as pride building as it is a big responsibility.  And we’re up for it.
