Penn Cove was once home to Lower Skagit tribes who built three permanent villages at this location, the largest being bah-TSAHD-ah-lee (snake place), now present-day Coupeville. The protected harbor, facing Saratoga Passage, offered abundant salmon, clams, mussels, flounder, sole, and cockles as well as easy access to nearby waterways and inland forests.  An old native burial site was located on the cove.

Did you know all that?

British Captain George Vancouver (1757-1798) made journal entries of his visit to the island in the summer of 1792. He named it in honor of Joseph Whidbey (1755-1833), master of the HMS Discovery, and Penn Cove in remembrance of a friend.  The native word for the island was Tscha-kole-chy.

The Mission of the Penn Cove Water Festival Association is to continue an annual revival of the historic Coupeville Water Festival by bringing families together to enjoy Native American canoe racing, entertainment, crafts and culture, and by giving them a chance to learn about, appreciate, and protect the environment in which we all live.

OPENING DAY – of the Coupeville Farmers Market

April 6th 2013 

What could be a better sign winter is over and spring is in full swing, but the Opening Day of the Coupeville Farmers Market!  TONS of vendors await you!

The opening bell will RING at 10am

Opening day of the Coupeville Farmers Market is one of the most exciting days of the market.  Residents and visitors of all ages come to celebrate reunions with their favorite vendors, discuss the weather (with tales of winter woe), hear about new produce plantings and harvest, enjoy lunch, music and each others.  It’s a family friendly day on the town green with your favorite farmers, artists, nurseries, food vendors and friends.

During opening day you can load up on healthy produce, meat, cheese, honey, jams, and then peruse the Friends of the Coupeville Library Book Sale, BBQ, Pizza, Kettle Corn, numerous food vendors and hopefully the sun!  Bring the kids to the Coupeville Farmers Market!

The Prairie Bottom & Willowood Farm tractor and iconic yellow and red trailer is already being loaded for the big day!  The trailer will be FULL of yummy produce, and surrounded by many other farms and farmers with equally delicious and healthy Whidbey grown foods at the Coupeville Farmers Market.

Three Sisters Beef will be front and center with their wonderful grass fed Whidbey grown  deliciousness, along with vendors with Whidbey harvested honey, Whidbey made cheeses, and lots more.

Perry Woodfin returns for another year to sell his watercolors.  Perry joins several regular artists who sell at the Coupeville Farmers Market.  See watercolors, yard art, fiber art and tons more!!

Coupeville Farmers Market operates in the Coupeville Community Green Saturdays, April through October. As a farmers market it is our mission to bring a balance of fresh local produce, artisans, crafts, foods, and interesting vendors.

Join us tomorrow as we welcome back the vendors and their devoted customers on the Town Green in Coupeville.

Ballots were taken by armed guard to the offices of the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association and held under lock and key until they were carefully counted this morning.  Now it’s official !

2nd and 3rd place came in with just 2% less votes – making it a tight race and proof each and every restaurant and food establishment in Coupeville cooked their hearts out to create a yummy mussel chowder this year.

Who Are The Friends of the Coupeville Library 

The Friends of the Coupeville Library is a dynamic not-for-profit, volunteer organization providing essential support to the Coupeville library. Many members work on specific projects related to the library (book sales, landscaping, programs, etc).

What They Do

The Friends of the Coupeville Library provide funding for childrens, teen and adult programming, History Day and various other projects. They also support the library with purchases such as a: copier, shelving, furniture and more.

When They Meet

The Friends of the Coupeville Library meet three times a year at the library – January, May and September. Please call 678-4911 for meeting dates.

How to Join

Membership applications are available at the Coupeville Library. Yearly membership dues are: $5.00. Please make checks payable to: Friends of the Coupeville Library.

The best information coming out, so far, is a recent article by Justin Burnett published in the Whidbey Examiner yesterday – Feb 7th.  We’ve linked that article at the end of this post for your benefit.

Please take caution avoiding the area.  The vibration and rumbling cars can have an impact. Maybe avoid taking your car or truck down that part of Front street.  Just a suggestion.

As to the issues of eroding coastlines in our area and town, they have been eroding for many years.  Few recall this, but Front Street didn’t always end at Gould.  Nope, it used to continue straight along in Front St and right in front of Capt. Coupe’s house and included an accompanying sidewalk.

Likewise, other bluffs along our island’s coast line have sloughed off in the past.  Long time residents can remember when a large landslide came down from a 300 foot bluff at Possession Beach, back in 1979.

More recently, in January, Whidbey experienced a devistating landslide down on the south end.  Thankfully no one was injured in that slide, but home owners are surely still in shock and wondering what next.  You can click the picture below to read more and see photos from KOMO News.

All of this has us wondering what the conversation will be about how we’re going to manage all of our coast lines.

As it is, most people want and enjoy having a view, but are views a danger to homeowners and our coastline.  Does construction weaken or add to the instability of a bluff.  We don’t know the answers, but we’re interested in retaining Front St. and hope this recent situation can be resolved and repaired.
